The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights, which enforces HIPAA, just entered into a settlement with a hospital system with 12 hospitals and over 300 service sites in North Carolina and Virginia.

The hospital system paid over $2 million as part of the settlement.

What was the alleged HIPAA violation?

Patient invoices were sent to the wrong patients by accident, thereby disclosing the protected health information of the wrong patients to the patients who received the invoices.
