Yesterday, Steven Mnuchin, Secretary of the Treasury, sent a one-page letter to Richard Neal, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, denying Neal’s request for copies of President Trump’s tax returns for 2013-2018.
Although Section 6103(f) of the Internal Revenue Code says that the Treasury Department “shall furnish” anyone’s tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee upon request, Secretary Mnuchin pointed in his letter to Constitutional limits on Congress’ authority to demand information, saying that “the Constitution requires that Congressional information demands must reasonably serve a legitimate legislative purpose.”
It looks as if this will all end up now in Federal court. Stay tuned.
